A South Boise family came home to nothing this weekend after a late-night fire destroyed their house while they were away on a camping trip near Idaho City. The blaze, which broke out in the early morning hours Saturday, left the residence a complete total loss and prompted a large response from Boise Fire Department crews.
Fire Breaks Out While Family Was Away
The family was on a weekend camping trip outside Idaho City when their phone rang at 2:30 a.m. Saturday with the news no homeowner wants to receive. By the time firefighters arrived, the home was already fully involved, with neighbors reporting flames shooting from windows and audible booms and crackles echoing through the neighborhood.
Boise Fire Department deployed a significant response to the scene, sending seven engines and two ladder trucks to battle the blaze. Despite the large mobilization, the structure could not be saved. A neighboring home and fence sustained minor damage, but no injuries were reported — a fortunate outcome given the intensity of the fire.
Homeowner Misty Al-Ghizzi described the moment she learned her house was burning. “It’s not real, that’s what went through my mind — it’s not real,” she said. Returning to see the damage firsthand made the reality impossible to avoid. “I did not expect to come back to total loss, complete and total loss,” Al-Ghizzi said.
Cause Still Under Investigation
Because no one was home at the time of the fire, there were no civilian injuries to report. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by fire officials. Investigators have not yet released any information pointing to a specific origin or ignition source.
Fires that occur while families are away — whether from electrical faults, appliance malfunctions, or other causes — are a reminder for Boise and Ada County homeowners to take preventative steps before leaving on extended trips, such as unplugging non-essential appliances, checking smoke detectors, and alerting a trusted neighbor.
What Comes Next
The Al-Ghizzi family is now working through the aftermath of losing their home and all its contents. Boise Fire investigators will continue examining the scene to determine what sparked the fire. Results of the investigation have not been given a public timeline for release.
