Semi-Truck Veers Off I-84 East of Boise, Injures Jeep Driver and Sparks Brush Fire

Sawtooth Valley, Idaho

A two-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 84 near Boise injured one driver and briefly sparked a small grass fire on the evening of August 7, 2026. Idaho State Police are investigating the collision, which happened at milepost 66 around 7:28 p.m. and involved a semi-truck and a Jeep Wrangler.

What Happened on I-84

According to investigators, a 2026 Peterbilt semi-truck operated by a 31-year-old man from Tulsa, Oklahoma, departed the roadway and struck a stationary 2009 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 40-year-old Boise resident. The force of the impact sent the Jeep onto its passenger side, coming to rest on the right shoulder of the freeway. The semi-truck continued off the road and ended up in a field south of the shoulder.

The Jeep driver sustained injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital. The semi-truck driver was not injured. Investigators noted both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The collision also ignited a small brush fire in an adjacent field, though emergency crews were able to extinguish it. The right eastbound lane of I-84 was temporarily closed while crews cleared the scene.

Multiple Ada County Agencies Respond

The response drew several Ada County and Boise-area agencies to the scene. Ada County Paramedics, Boise Fire Department, Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Boise Police Department, and the Idaho Transportation Department all assisted Idaho State Police at the crash site. The coordinated response helped contain the brush fire and manage traffic through the affected corridor.

Crashes involving semi-trucks on I-84 near Boise can quickly involve multiple agencies given the freeway’s role as a primary commercial corridor through the Treasure Valley. A separate incident earlier this year also drew a multi-agency response when a driver lost consciousness and crashed into an occupied Boise home.

Impact on Eastbound I-84 Traffic

The closure of the right eastbound lane caused delays for commuters and commercial drivers traveling through the area east of Boise on a Thursday evening. Milepost 66 sits in a stretch of I-84 that sees heavy truck traffic, making incidents in that corridor particularly disruptive during peak hours. Idaho Transportation Department personnel assisted with traffic control while the scene was being cleared.

The cause of the crash — specifically why the semi-truck left the roadway before striking the parked Jeep — remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.

What Comes Next

Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the crash. No charges or citations have been publicly announced at this time. Anyone who witnessed the collision near milepost 66 on eastbound I-84 on the evening of August 7 is encouraged to contact Idaho State Police.

Drivers along the I-84 corridor near Boise are reminded that seat belt use — as was the case with both drivers in this incident — remains one of the most effective ways to reduce injury severity in crashes. Ada County residents can monitor traffic conditions and incident updates through the Idaho 511 system operated by the Idaho Transportation Department.
