Annual ACHD art contest for students has America 250 theme

Ada County Highway District Launches America 250 Art Contest for Idaho Students in Grades 6-12

The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) has announced its annual student art contest for 2026, this year centered on an America 250 theme in honor of the United States’ upcoming semiquincentennial. The contest is open to Ada County residents in grades six through 12, inviting young artists across the Treasure Valley to submit original artwork that captures what America means to them. Winning designs will be displayed on ACHD’s sweeper trucks, giving student artists a unique form of public recognition throughout the Boise area and surrounding communities.

America’s 250th Anniversary Inspires This Year’s Theme

The United States is approaching its 250th anniversary — a milestone known as the semiquincentennial — and ACHD is marking the occasion by asking local students to reflect on American identity, values, and heritage through visual art. The agency’s America250 theme gives Ada County’s young people a chance to connect with the nation’s history and meaning in a personal and creative way.

According to ACHD’s press statement, “Artists are invited to showcase their perspective of what America means to them.” The agency outlined several suggested themes students might explore, including family traditions and celebrations, what freedom looks like to the individual artist, American symbols such as flags, fireworks, or local heroes, and the history of transportation in the United States.

For many Ada County families, the contest represents a valuable opportunity for students to engage with civics and American heritage in a hands-on, expressive way — the kind of community-centered learning that resonates with Treasure Valley parents and educators alike.

Contest Rules and Submission Details for Ada County Students

The ACHD art contest is open exclusively to Ada County residents currently enrolled in grades six through 12. Eligible media types include drawings, paintings, and graphic designs. All artwork must be submitted in an 11×17-inch landscape format and can be turned in either on paper or electronically.

Students and families have two options for submitting artwork:

Online: Submissions can be made through ACHD’s official website at achdidaho.org/artcontest.

By Mail or Drop-Off: Physical submissions can be mailed to or delivered in person to the Ada County Highway District at 5800 N. Meeker Ave., Boise, ID 83713.

The submission deadline is May 22, 2026. Students are encouraged to submit their work well ahead of the deadline to ensure entries are received and processed in time.

Impact on Ada County Students and the Broader Community

Winning student artists will earn more than just recognition — their artwork will be featured directly on ACHD’s sweeper trucks, giving their designs visibility across Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Star, and other Ada County communities. Each winning artist will also receive a $50 gift card as a prize.

The contest reflects ACHD’s ongoing effort to engage the community beyond its core mission of managing and maintaining Ada County’s road network. By connecting a government infrastructure agency with student creativity and American patriotism, the program builds goodwill between local institutions and the families they serve.

For families interested in additional community events and programs that impact Ada County students and residents, Boise State University’s iconic Blue Turf remains one of the most recognizable symbols of local pride in the region. Separately, Boise State recently announced a naming rights sponsorship deal for its student union with Westmark Credit Union, another example of how Treasure Valley institutions continue to evolve.

What Comes Next: How Ada County Students Can Enter

Ada County students in grades six through 12 who want to participate should begin working on their submissions now. The May 22 deadline gives families several weeks to complete and submit entries. Artwork can be submitted online at achdidaho.org/artcontest or dropped off at ACHD headquarters at 5800 N. Meeker Ave. in Boise.

Parents and teachers looking to encourage participation can use the contest as a springboard for broader conversations about American history, community identity, and civic pride — all timely topics as the nation approaches its 250th birthday in 2026.
