Revived Boise Airport flight takes you to California wineries and beyond

Alaska Airlines Revives Boise to California Wine Country Route, Adds Anchorage Flight

Boise Airport travelers will soon have a new nonstop option to Northern California’s wine country after Alaska Airlines announced it will resume seasonal service between Boise and Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, California. The flight — which connects the Treasure Valley to one of the nation’s premier wine regions — is set to launch November 1 and run nearly daily through mid-April 2027, giving Idaho residents convenient winter access to the North Bay Area.

A Route Returning After a Year-Long Gap

The Santa Rosa route is not entirely new to Boise fliers. A previous carrier, Avelo Airlines, had operated the connection until last year, when the airline ended its Boise service after accepting a federal government contract to operate deportation flights. Alaska Airlines is now stepping in to fill that void, and airport officials say the demand was always there.

Boise Airport spokesperson Shawna Samuelson called the route revival a win for regional connectivity. “This route proved to be highly valued by our passengers when it was previously served,” Samuelson said. “The restored nonstop connection links two vibrant regions and gives travelers convenient access to California’s wine country and the greater North Bay Area.”

Alaska Airlines VP of Network Planning and Revenue Management Kirsten Amrine framed the expansion as part of a broader California strategy. “Alaska is committed to California, and we’re proud to offer guests across the state even more options for their next vacation or work trip,” she said in a statement.

Boise Airport Continues to Expand Nonstop Options

The new Santa Rosa route will bring Alaska’s total nonstop destinations from Boise to 18, a substantial lead over Southwest Airlines, which offers 10 nonstop cities from the airport. The Sonoma County flight also qualifies for a unique perk: Alaska allows rewards program members to check a case of wine — up to 12 bottles, capped at 50 pounds — for free on flights between Boise and Sonoma County. Southwest offers a comparable wine-check program at many West Coast airports.

Beyond the California expansion, Alaska also announced it will add Boise-to-Anchorage nonstop service beginning June 10. When that summer seasonal route launches, it will mark the first time Treasure Valley travelers can reach Alaska’s largest city without a connecting flight — a milestone for the region’s growing air travel market.

On the same announcement, Alaska also revealed new routes from Santa Rosa to Phoenix and Salt Lake City, as well as added service between Southern California’s Long Beach Airport and Seattle — further cementing the airline’s West Coast footprint.

Impact on Ada County Travelers and the Local Economy

For Ada County residents and businesses, the continued expansion of Boise Airport’s route map represents both travel convenience and an economic signal. The airport shattered its annual passenger record in 2025, welcoming more than 5.2 million passengers through its terminals. Through the first quarter of 2026, the airport is running approximately 1.3% ahead of that record pace — a sign that demand shows no signs of slowing.

More nonstop options reduce the need for travelers to connect through larger, congested hubs, saving time and money for families and business travelers alike. The revival of the Sonoma County route in particular opens up a popular tourism corridor for both directions of travel — Idaho visitors heading to wine country, and California visitors heading to the Treasure Valley for skiing, outdoor recreation, and other seasonal draws.

Growth at Boise Airport also ties into broader infrastructure investment across Ada County. Residents tracking development in the region may also be interested in the second phase of the Chinden and 43rd Street crossing project, another infrastructure improvement affecting Treasure Valley commuters, as well as Ada County’s planned footbridge over the Boise River near Expo Idaho, which highlights continued investment in regional connectivity.

What Comes Next

Alaska Airlines’ Boise-to-Sonoma County route is scheduled to begin November 1, 2026, running nearly every day through mid-April 2027. The Boise-to-Anchorage route launches June 10, 2026. Travelers interested in either route can book through Alaska Airlines directly. Those enrolled in the airline’s rewards program should confirm wine-check eligibility at time of booking.
