Thousands of Ada County residents lost electricity Thursday evening after severe thunderstorms brought heavy winds and lightning to the Treasure Valley. Idaho Power reported multiple widespread outages beginning shortly after 4 p.m. across Boise, Meridian, and Garden City.
Peak Outages Affect Over 10,000 Customers
At the height of the storm, more than 10,000 Idaho Power customers were without electricity across several affected areas, according to the utility’s online outage tracking system. The largest single outage knocked out power to more than 2,700 customers in Boise’s North End and downtown neighborhoods. Another significant outage left more than 1,500 customers in the dark on the Boise Bench.
Meridian residents also experienced power disruptions as the storm system moved through the western Treasure Valley during the late afternoon hours.
Severe Weather Triggers Widespread Disruptions
The outages occurred as the National Weather Service maintained a severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Ada County. Residents across the Boise area reported strong wind gusts and frequent lightning strikes as the storm cell passed overhead.
Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds pose risks to electrical infrastructure, particularly overhead power lines and distribution equipment. The combination of high winds and lightning can cause equipment failures and downed lines that interrupt service to large numbers of customers.
Restoration Efforts Underway
Idaho Power crews worked to restore service throughout the evening. The utility reported that major outages affecting thousands of customers have been resolved, though isolated pockets without power remained scattered across Ada County.
Power company personnel continue working to address remaining outages on an individual basis. The utility has not released estimates for when all affected customers will have service restored.
Impact on Ada County Residents
The sudden loss of electricity during the dinner hour disrupted thousands of households across Boise, Meridian, and surrounding communities. Power outages can affect home cooling systems, food storage, medical equipment, and communications devices that rely on electrical service.
Residents experiencing ongoing outages can check Idaho Power’s outage map online for updates on restoration efforts in their specific area. The utility typically prioritizes repairs that restore service to the largest number of customers first, followed by work on smaller isolated outages.
Thursday’s storm system represents typical severe weather that can impact the Treasure Valley during spring and summer months, when atmospheric conditions favor the development of powerful thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and heavy precipitation.
