Ada County officials and community partners gathered Thursday morning to honor 28 individuals who died without known next of kin. The annual “Remembered with Compassion” ceremony marked the final resting arrangements for those laid to rest at Meridian’s Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens.
A Decade of Dignified Burials
The event, now in its tenth year, represents a collaborative effort between the Ada County Coroner’s Office, the county treasurer’s office, and Cloverdale Funeral Home. Since 2016, Cloverdale has donated a crypt at the memorial gardens where hundreds of unclaimed deceased have been interred with dignity.
The group honored on Thursday ranged in age from infancy to 90 years old. Some of those laid to rest had passed away as recently as last year, while others had died up to two decades ago. County coroner’s office employees read each name aloud during the service, ensuring every individual was acknowledged by title.
Community Leaders Pay Tribute
Jake Garn, a participant in the ceremony, addressed the gathering with a reflection on the isolation faced by some of the deceased. “Today, we gather for those people whose final chapter was written without those familiar voices around them,” Garn said.
Coroner Richard Riffle also spoke, emphasizing the humanity of those being honored. “Each person laid to rest here once walked among us. They basked in the glow of the sun…” Riffle noted during his remarks.
Closing the Ceremony
A memorial wreath was presented at the mausoleum as part of the tribute. The service concluded with a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace,” providing a solemn end to the proceedings for the 28 individuals whose final arrangements were entrusted to the county.
