Boise Airport Secures $74 Million in Federal Grants for Runway and Apron Upgrades

United States Capitol

Boise Airport has been awarded $74 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants to fund major airfield infrastructure improvements, positioning the facility to handle increased traffic and enhance operational safety across the region. The three grants target runway reconstruction, precision lighting systems, and expansion of aircraft parking infrastructure as the airport supports growing demand in Ada County and the Treasure Valley.

Major Runway Reconstruction Underway

The largest of the three awards, a $59.4 million Airport Improvement Program grant, is funding the complete reconstruction of one of Boise Airport’s two parallel runways. Construction began in March and is scheduled to span two full construction seasons, representing a substantial undertaking for the facility that serves tens of thousands of passengers annually.

Complementing the runway reconstruction effort, a separate $4.9 million grant is supporting installation of a runway visual guidance system on the newly rebuilt runway. This system includes centerline lighting designed to assist pilots during approach procedures, particularly in low-visibility conditions, enhancing safety margins for incoming and departing aircraft.

Beth Sumner, Boise Airport’s deputy director of engineering, emphasized the critical importance of this work. “The runways and airfield are the most critical pieces of infrastructure at an airport,” Sumner said, underscoring why federal investment in these systems directly impacts operational safety and efficiency.

Apron Expansion Supports Future Terminal Growth

The third grant, worth $9.6 million through the Airport Infrastructure Grant program, is funding the second and final phase of aircraft apron construction on the airport’s south side. This expansion is designed to accommodate a future Concourse A, positioning Boise Airport for capacity growth as passenger volumes and regional economic activity continue to increase. The first phase of the apron project began in 2025, with this latest funding completing the groundwork for terminal expansion.

Regional Impact and Infrastructure Development

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean highlighted the significance of the federal investment for Ada County’s infrastructure future. “Boise is honored to receive these FAA grants, which will help advance three key infrastructure projects as our airport continues to support our region’s growth,” McLean said.

The $74 million in federal funding reflects the airport’s importance not only as a transportation hub but as critical infrastructure supporting the region’s continued economic development. The Treasure Valley has experienced sustained population and business growth over the past decade, placing increasing demands on the airport’s capacity and facilities. These upgrades ensure that Boise Airport can accommodate that growth efficiently and safely.

The timing of the grants coincides with broader infrastructure investment across Ada County. Similar to ongoing construction projects managed by agencies such as the Ada County Highway District and Boise State University’s campus development initiatives, the airport’s multi-season runway reconstruction will require careful traffic management and coordination with regional stakeholders to minimize disruption while maintaining operational capacity.

What Comes Next

With runway reconstruction already underway as of March 2026, the two-year project timeline means significant construction activity will continue through 2027. Passengers and airport stakeholders should anticipate ongoing coordination announcements regarding any operational adjustments or scheduling impacts. The apron expansion for the future concourse represents longer-term planning, positioning the airport for facility growth beyond the current runway work.

The Federal Aviation Administration grants underscore federal recognition of Boise Airport’s role in supporting regional economic vitality. For Ada County residents, businesses, and travelers, these infrastructure improvements translate to enhanced safety, increased capacity, and better positioning for the Treasure Valley’s continued growth in the years ahead.
