Boise Greenbelt Stabbing Suspect Has Lengthy Criminal Record Spanning Two Decades

A man charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a 25-year-old on Boise’s Greenbelt has a documented criminal history stretching more than twenty years, court records show. Ross Allen Wardlaw Jr. was arrested Thursday at Corpus Commons shelter in downtown Boise and faces charges in the death of Jordan Harbst, who was killed in the early morning hours on the Greenbelt near 11th Street behind The Arid Club.

The case has renewed attention to public safety concerns on the popular Greenbelt pathway, a recreational area frequently used by Boise residents and visitors. Wardlaw’s background—documented in Idaho court filings—reveals a pattern of criminal involvement, incarceration, and struggles with housing instability that span decades.

Criminal History and Prison Time

Court records indicate Wardlaw’s criminal involvement began more than twenty years ago. In 2004, he pleaded guilty to battery, resulting in probation. Violations of that probation sent him back to Idaho State Prison, where he served seven years before his release in 2012.

Following his 2012 release, Wardlaw has remained involved with the criminal justice system. Last summer, he faced battery charges again. Most recently, a jury acquitted him on aggravated assault and battery charges in May of this year—just weeks before the stabbing that led to the current murder charge.

Life in Boise and Homelessness

Wardlaw has lived in Boise since the 1990s, when he moved to the area as a middle school student. For much of the past decade-plus, he has experienced homelessness. In a June interview at Corpus Commons—the same shelter where he was arrested Thursday—Wardlaw described the facility as a refuge from the elements. “It’s really good to be at a place where it’ll keep you from being exposed to the elements,” he said.

When asked about his housing status following his 2012 prison release, Wardlaw confirmed his long struggle with homelessness: “Yes, yes, ma’am. Since I got out of prison in 2012.”

Shelter staff at Corpus Commons knew Wardlaw by the nickname “RJ” and reported no previous issues with his conduct at the facility prior to his arrest.

Recent Custody and Mental Health Involvement

Over the past year, Wardlaw has cycled in and out of custody and behavioral health facilities, according to court and detention records. This pattern of incarceration and mental health interventions reflects ongoing struggles that were not resolved by his acquittal on assault charges in May.

The stabbing death of Harbst occurred just weeks after that acquittal, raising questions about the effectiveness of available interventions for individuals with Wardlaw’s background of recurrent criminal behavior and housing instability.

Current Status and Presumption of Innocence

Wardlaw remains presumed innocent of the murder charge unless and until proven guilty. The case has been assigned to Ada County courts. A judge has already denied bond in the case, meaning Wardlaw is being held in custody pending trial.

The death of Harbst has drawn attention to both criminal justice outcomes and the broader challenges facing Boise’s homeless population, many of whom rely on shelters like Corpus Commons for basic safety and protection from weather.

What Comes Next

The case will proceed through Ada County’s court system. Residents seeking more information about the investigation or court proceedings can contact the Boise Police Department or monitor official Ada County court records. Additional details about the arrest and custody decision are available in prior reporting on the case.

The Greenbelt remains a valued public space for thousands of Boise residents. Safety concerns raised by the stabbing have renewed focus on the pathways and the resources available to address homelessness and mental health issues in Ada County.
