Boise, Nampa and nearby areas under severe thunderstorm warning until 9 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Boise and Nampa and the surrounding southwest Idaho region until 9 p.m. MDT on Thursday, with forecasters warning of potentially damaging wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. The warning covered Boise City, the broader Boise metro area, Nampa, and nearby communities across the Treasure Valley.

What the Storm Brought to the Treasure Valley

Residents across Ada County and Canyon County faced a volatile afternoon as the severe weather system pushed through southwest Idaho. The most immediate concern was wind — forecasters indicated gusts could reach 70 mph during the height of the storm, a level capable of downing trees, damaging structures, and knocking out power lines.

Even after the warning period expired, unsettled conditions were expected to linger. Overnight winds were forecast to continue out of the south, sustained at 15 to 20 mph with gusts pushing to around 30 mph. Residents were advised to remain alert through the evening hours.

Strong thunderstorms of this magnitude can cause rapid and widespread impacts across urban and suburban areas. Residents with outdoor furniture, trampolines, or unsecured equipment were urged to take precautions ahead of the strongest gusts. Hundreds of customers across Ada County lost power amid the severe thunderstorm activity, as utility crews worked to restore service.

Impact on Ada County Residents

For Ada County homeowners and commuters, the storm posed risks well beyond a standard afternoon thunderstorm. Wind gusts in the 70 mph range are capable of causing significant property damage, and the Treasure Valley’s mix of established neighborhoods and newer subdivisions with young trees added to the vulnerability of the region.

Drivers were encouraged to exercise caution on area roadways, as high-profile vehicles are particularly susceptible to severe crosswinds. The Ada County Highway District and local law enforcement agencies monitor road conditions during weather events of this scale.

The storm warning arrived during a period of otherwise transitional weather for the region. The weekend outlook called for sunny skies near 73 degrees with gusty west-northwest winds, with the possibility of scattered mountain showers for those venturing into higher elevations. The cooler weekend pattern was tied to the departure of a low-pressure system that had influenced conditions throughout the week.

The severe weather served as a reminder of the fire-weather risks that accompany dry, windy conditions in the high desert. Earlier this week, a brush fire burned in the Mountain Home area of nearby Elmore County, underscoring how quickly dry vegetation and strong winds can combine to create dangerous conditions across southwest Idaho. Separately, the Nichol Fire burned approximately 380 acres south of Kuna before being contained, highlighting the broader fire threat facing Ada County and surrounding areas this season.

What Comes Next

The severe thunderstorm warning expired at 9 p.m. MDT Thursday, but residents should continue monitoring local weather alerts through the National Weather Service Boise office, which issues updated forecasts and any additional watches or warnings as conditions evolve.

With gusty winds expected to persist overnight and into the weekend, Ada County residents should:

  • Secure loose outdoor items that could become projectiles in high wind
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report outages to their utility provider
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind conditions
  • Check the National Weather Service Boise forecast at weather.gov/boi for the latest watches, warnings, and advisories

As the region moves into the summer recreation season, residents planning trips to the Boise foothills, the Sawtooths, or other backcountry areas are encouraged to check mountain weather forecasts carefully, as conditions can change rapidly at elevation.
