Governor Brad Little and the Idaho Department of Commerce have recommended five Boise neighborhoods for federal Opportunity Zone designation, a tax incentive program designed to attract private investment in economic development, according to KIVI. The five areas selected are Downtown, Shoreline, University District, South Boise Village, and West Boise.
Opportunity Zones offer tax benefits to investors without drawing from city or state tax dollars. The program allows private capital to flow into housing, small business ventures, commercial development, and property redevelopment projects. Officials evaluated each area based on economic conditions, infrastructure proximity, zoning regulations, and existing incentive programs before making their selections.
The designation process included data review, resident input, and consultation with community partners. City officials emphasized that while the zones create a framework for investment, the city does not determine which specific projects receive funding.
Mayor Lauren McLean told the KIVI 6 On Your Side the designations represent “a win for Boise,” noting that “these tax benefits will help encourage growth and investment by spurring the market to build more homes, start new businesses, and create more jobs for our residents.” She added that intentional growth near parks, schools, and transit corridors could reduce commute times and strengthen community connections.
If approved by the U.S. Treasury, the designations would take effect January 1, 2027, and remain in place for ten years. The recommendation now moves forward for federal review. The move follows other recent development approvals in the Boise area and ongoing construction projects near Meridian.
