Boise State Campus Faces Building Closures and Road Detours During Summer Construction Season

Interstate highway

Boise State University is navigating a busy summer of infrastructure work, with multiple building closures and road restrictions affecting students, staff, and visitors on campus through the end of the year. Several key facilities are temporarily shutting down for electrical and structural upgrades, while a major parking and road project is reshaping access near the ExtraMile Arena.

Building Closures Affecting Campus Access

Albertsons Library is the most frequently affected facility this summer. The building closed May 11–29 for switchgear replacement work, and it will close again from June 29 through July 31 for the same ongoing electrical infrastructure project. Students relying on the library for summer coursework or research should plan around those closures.

The Math Building is also closed June 1–29 for switchgear replacement, affecting faculty, staff, and any students enrolled in summer sessions that use that facility.

The Westmark Student Union Building faces a brief but full closure June 27–28 due to roof work. Starting June 29, access to the building will be restricted through December 29 to accommodate telescopic handler equipment needed for the project — a disruption that will last well into the fall semester.

West Stadium Lot and Bronco Lane: A Four-Phase Construction Project

The most complex disruption involves the West Stadium Lot and Bronco Lane, where a four-phase construction project runs from May 11 through September 11. Each phase targets a different section of the lot and roadway, with that section reopening to traffic and parking once work wraps up.

Phase 1 closes the west section of Bronco Lane. Phase 2 shuts down the north section of the West Stadium Lot — the area between ExtraMile Arena and Chaffee Hall — which also affects access to the North Tower and the Stueckle Sky Center entrance. Notably, Phase 2 also cuts off greenbelt access through the West Stadium Lot, pushing cyclists to an alternate route via Theater Lane.

Phase 3 moves to the southwest section of the lot, between Bronco Gym and ExtraMile Arena. Phase 4 targets the east section of Bronco Lane along with the portion of the lot in front of the Bronco Athletics ticket office.

Each section is expected to reopen once its phase is complete, so access conditions will change gradually through the summer months.

What Comes Next for Campus Visitors and Commuters

Anyone heading to Boise State’s campus this summer — whether for classes, events at ExtraMile Arena, or routine business — should check construction schedules before arriving. The Westmark Student Union access restriction extends all the way to December 29, meaning it will affect the start of the fall semester as well.

Cyclists and pedestrians using the Boise greenbelt as a commuting route near campus will need to plan for detours during Phase 2 of the West Stadium Lot project. Infrastructure disruptions like these reflect a broader pattern of aging utility systems requiring attention across Boise — a challenge not limited to university grounds. Boise has also been redirecting city utility funds toward aging facility upgrades elsewhere in the region, and sidewalk and connectivity gaps remain a recurring issue for pedestrians and cyclists across Ada County.

Boise State has not announced any changes to summer academic schedules as a result of the construction. The university is expected to provide updated access information as each project phase progresses.
