Elderly Boise Man in Critical Condition After Being Struck on I-84 in Meridian

A 76-year-old Boise man was critically injured early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle while walking on westbound Interstate 84 in Meridian, Idaho. The crash, which occurred around 2:37 a.m. on July 12, 2026, near milepost 45, prompted a response from multiple agencies and closed two lanes of westbound traffic for roughly three hours.

What Happened on I-84

According to Idaho State Police, the elderly man was on foot in the far-right westbound lane of I-84 when he was struck by a 2013 Nissan 370Z. The driver, a 19-year-old Meridian man, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the collision.

Ground ambulance crews transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. His identity has not been publicly released.

The two far-right lanes of westbound I-84 near the crash scene remained closed for approximately three hours as investigators worked the scene. The Meridian Police Department, Meridian Fire Department, and Ada County Paramedics all assisted Idaho State Police at the site.

A Dangerous Stretch of Treasure Valley Interstate

I-84 through the Meridian and Boise corridor is one of the busiest roadways in the Treasure Valley, carrying heavy traffic volumes at all hours. Pedestrian incidents on interstate highways are among the most dangerous law enforcement and emergency responders encounter, particularly in low-visibility conditions during the early morning hours.

The circumstances that led the man onto the interstate in the early hours of Sunday morning have not been disclosed. Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash.

Public safety concerns along Ada County’s major roadways have drawn attention in recent months. Violent incidents elsewhere in the Boise area — including a Boise Greenbelt stabbing suspect with a lengthy criminal record and a subsequent case in which an Ada County man was held without bond following a fatal assault — have kept law enforcement resources stretched across the region.

Impact on Ada County Commuters and Residents

The early-morning lane closures affected westbound I-84 traffic near milepost 45, a stretch that runs through Meridian and connects to Boise’s western approaches. Though the closure occurred during off-peak hours, the three-hour shutdown underscored the disruption that serious crashes can cause even in the middle of the night on a major interstate corridor.

For Ada County families, incidents like this serve as a sobering reminder of the hazards present on high-speed roadways. Idaho State Police routinely urge drivers to remain attentive, reduce speed when conditions are unclear, and watch for unexpected hazards in travel lanes — particularly after dark and in the early morning hours when visibility is reduced and driver fatigue is more common.

What Comes Next

Idaho State Police are leading the investigation into the crash and have not announced whether any citations or charges are expected in connection with the collision. As is standard procedure, investigators will examine vehicle data, roadway conditions, and other physical evidence before the inquiry concludes.

The pedestrian’s condition may change, and updates from the hospital or law enforcement could follow in the coming days. Anyone with information about the crash near milepost 45 on westbound I-84 in Meridian in the early hours of July 12 is encouraged to contact the Idaho State Police.

Residents traveling I-84 through Meridian and the greater Treasure Valley are reminded to exercise caution at all hours, particularly during overnight hours when pedestrian visibility is severely limited and response times to emergencies can be longer.
