A familiar destination for rock climbing enthusiasts in the Treasure Valley is set to shut its doors this fall. Asana Climbing Gym, located at 4977 North Glenwood Street in Garden City, Idaho, will permanently close on November 29, 2026, ending a 13-year run that made it one of the region’s most recognized indoor climbing facilities.
How the Closure Came About
Owner Jamey Sproull informed members of the closure through an email announcement, explaining that the gym’s future was ultimately decided by its landlord rather than by any business shortfall. The original lease at the Glenwood Street location expired June 30, 2026, and while property management agreed to extend it through the end of the year, they declined to offer a new long-term agreement.
“Our current lease was set to end on June 30, 2026, and although we have been granted an extension through the end of the year, we have not been offered a new long-term lease agreement,” Sproull wrote. He added: “Unfortunately, there are factors outside of my control, and property management has made it clear that they intend to lease to another party.”
The building’s owners plan to either lease the space to a new tenant or repurpose the property entirely, leaving no path forward for Asana at its current address.
Relocation Search Came Up Short
Sproull did not arrive at the closure announcement quickly. He spent roughly two years exploring options to keep the gym alive, whether at its current site or at a new one. Indoor climbing facilities require significant ceiling height and specific zoning to accommodate walls and safety equipment, and those requirements proved to be a major obstacle during the search.
Available spaces in the area that met the necessary height and zoning specifications came with substantially higher lease rates than what the gym currently pays — rates that would have made continued operation financially impractical. Spaces that were more affordable lacked the physical requirements needed to run a climbing gym. With no viable middle ground identified, Sproull concluded that closing was the only realistic option.
A 13-Year Run in the Treasure Valley
Asana Climbing Gym first opened in 2013 at a location off Chinden Boulevard before moving to its current Garden City address in 2016. Over more than a decade, it became a gathering place for climbers of all skill levels across the Boise metro area, from beginners looking to try the sport for the first time to experienced athletes training on technical routes.
Garden City has seen considerable commercial and residential development in recent years, and the pressure on lease rates and available industrial-style spaces in the area reflects broader trends affecting small specialty businesses across Ada County. Gyms, studios, and similar facilities that require large, high-ceiling spaces have faced mounting challenges as the Treasure Valley’s commercial real estate market has tightened.
It is worth noting that Asana Climbing — the bouldering equipment manufacturing company that shares a name with the gym — is a separate business and will continue operating. The closure affects only the Garden City gym.
What Comes Next for Members
Members of Asana Climbing Gym have until November 29, 2026, to continue using the facility under their current memberships. Those with active memberships should expect further communication from Sproull regarding any remaining membership terms, refunds, or transition details as the closure date approaches.
Climbers in the Boise area looking for alternatives may need to watch for any new facilities that could emerge to fill the gap left by Asana’s closure. The Treasure Valley’s growing population has increasingly supported specialty fitness and recreational venues, and the demand that sustained Asana for 13 years is unlikely to disappear with it.
Boise and the surrounding region continue to attract a wide range of community events and activities. Residents interested in other upcoming community happenings can also check coverage of a major chemistry conference coming to Boise this month, which is drawing national attention to the city.
For now, Asana Climbing Gym remains open at 4977 North Glenwood Street in Garden City through November 29, 2026.
