Gunfire erupts near Ada County deputies processing suicide scene in Kuna, Idaho

Shots Fired Near Ada County Deputies at Kuna Scene Lead to Two Arrests

Kuna, Idaho — Two individuals were taken into custody early Sunday morning after gunfire erupted near a group of Ada County Sheriff’s Office personnel who were processing a suicide scene along S. Cole Road south of W. Ten Mile Creek Road in Kuna. No law enforcement officers or investigators were injured in the incident, which unfolded in the early morning hours when deputies say roughly a dozen rounds ricocheted in their vicinity.

What Happened at the Kuna Scene

At approximately 2:36 a.m. Sunday, a team of Ada County Sheriff’s Office personnel — including two patrol deputies, an ACSO detective, three ACSO Forensic Scientists, and an investigator with the Ada County Coroner’s Office — were on scene responding to an individual who had taken their own life in a rural stretch of Kuna. The group was actively processing the scene when they heard gunshots.

According to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, approximately a dozen rounds began to ricochet near the personnel, forcing them to take cover. Deputies quickly moved to search the surrounding area for the source of the gunfire.

Deputies located a vehicle traveling north on S. Cole Road toward W. Ten Mile Creek Road with its lights blacked out. As deputies approached, the passenger discarded a firearm from the vehicle — a weapon that was later recovered by law enforcement. Both the driver and the passenger were taken into custody without further incident.

Two Suspects Arrested, Face Aggravated Assault Charges

Abel Olmos, 18, was arrested and charged with seven counts of Aggravated Assault. Olmos was booked into the Ada County Jail following his arrest.

A 16-year-old male juvenile was also arrested and charged with seven counts of Aggravated Assault and one count of Destruction of Evidence — the latter charge connected to the discarded firearm. The juvenile was booked into the Ada County Juvenile Detention Center.

The seven counts of Aggravated Assault correspond to the seven law enforcement and coroner personnel who were present at the scene when the shots were fired.

Impact on Ada County Public Safety Personnel

The incident highlights the dangers faced by Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputies and support personnel even in circumstances that do not initially involve violent crime. In this case, forensic scientists and a coroner’s investigator — professionals whose work typically occurs away from active threats — were placed in harm’s way without warning.

The fact that the vehicle was traveling with its lights blacked out in a rural Kuna area in the middle of the night raised immediate concern for responding deputies. The recovery of the discarded firearm played a critical role in the subsequent Destruction of Evidence charge filed against the juvenile suspect.

Ada County, which has seen consistent population growth across communities like Kuna, Star, and Meridian, continues to place increasing demands on the Ada County Sheriff’s Office as rural areas develop and calls for service grow. Public safety incidents in previously quieter corners of the county — like the rural roads south of Kuna — are becoming a more regular occurrence for ACSO personnel.

What Comes Next

Abel Olmos, 18, remains booked into the Ada County Jail pending further proceedings. The juvenile suspect is being held at the Ada County Juvenile Detention Center, where cases are handled through the juvenile justice system. The Ada County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details regarding the investigation into the source or motive behind the gunfire.

Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Ada County Sheriff’s Office. Residents in the Kuna area and surrounding communities who have information about suspicious activity on rural roads — particularly in the early morning hours — are urged to report concerns to law enforcement promptly.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office has not announced any additional suspects in connection with the shooting incident at this time.
