A Meridian coffee shop that doubles as a children’s play space and community gathering hub is drawing families from across the Treasure Valley — and the idea for it was born not in Idaho, but in South Korea. Cafe + Play, owned by Allison Osborn, opened its doors in August 2025 and has spent its first nine months building a loyal base of parents, young children, and local small businesses looking for a welcoming, family-centered space in the heart of Meridian.
A Personal Journey Behind the Business
Osborn became a mother in 2021, and like many new parents, found the experience came with unexpected emotional weight. “I felt the effects of anxiety and isolation that came with it,” she said. The turning point came when her firstborn was about a year old and she traveled with family to South Korea, where she encountered a concept largely unfamiliar to most American parents: the play café. These establishments combine quality coffee service with dedicated play areas for young children, allowing parents to relax while their kids explore in a safe environment.
That experience stayed with her. Over the next two and a half years, Osborn developed a business plan, secured financing through ICCU, and transformed a former bird shop into what Cafe + Play is today. The build-out was not without challenges — she paid out of pocket for a new HVAC system and electrical upgrades to get the space ready for customers and children alike.
“I loved that out of my pain, my purpose was born,” Osborn said. “I am a woman of faith and know that this is what I was called to do.”
Coffee, Pastries, and a Place to Play
The menu at Cafe + Play covers the staples of a quality coffee shop — espresso drinks, matcha, tea, fresh pastries, and breakfast burritos — while the adjoining play space sets the business apart from a standard café. The space is designed with young families in mind, and Osborn has built programming around that focus. Sensory baby classes take place on site, and the café offers birthday party packages for families who want a ready-made venue for celebrations.
Beyond the regular menu and play offerings, Osborn has made weekly pop-up events a cornerstone of the business model. Local service providers, small business owners, and community organizations rotate through the café, creating a marketplace of sorts for Meridian parents. Past participants have included speech therapists, lactation consultants, photographers, naturopathic practitioners, personal trainers, educators, and nonprofits. The Meridian Police Department even held a “Coffee with a Cop” session at the café, giving families a casual setting to connect with local officers — the kind of community-policing event that builds trust between residents and law enforcement.
Impact on Meridian Families and Small Businesses
For Meridian parents navigating the early years of raising children, Cafe + Play fills a gap that few local businesses address directly. The combination of a comfortable adult space and a safe children’s area means parents do not have to choose between getting out of the house and keeping young kids entertained. The pop-up events add a practical layer, connecting families with health, wellness, and creative professionals in a low-pressure environment.
The shop’s model also supports the kind of local small-business ecosystem that benefits the broader Treasure Valley economy. Independent service providers gain exposure to a targeted audience of young families, while Cafe + Play draws more foot traffic and repeat visitors through the rotating events. It is the sort of community-building enterprise that complements other family-focused investments across the region, like the recently reopened Fairview Park playground in Boise, which added accessible and inclusive features for children of all abilities.
What Comes Next
Osborn is already thinking about how to expand Cafe + Play’s reach beyond its Meridian storefront. She is considering launching a mobile coffee cart that could bring the brand to community events across the Treasure Valley, giving the business a presence at outdoor markets, neighborhood gatherings, and other local venues. If realized, the cart would extend Cafe + Play’s mission — a community-centered space for families — beyond four walls and into the broader region.
Families interested in visiting Cafe + Play, attending a sensory class, booking a birthday party, or checking the schedule of upcoming pop-up events can find information through the café’s social media channels. For Treasure Valley residents looking for more locally driven community spaces and events, the growth of businesses like Cafe + Play reflects a broader appetite for gathering places that serve families at every stage.
