Minnesota Business Firm Acquires 90-Year-Old Garden City Office Equipment Company

Downtown Boise, Idaho

Loffler Companies, a Minnesota-based firm, has acquired Fisher’s Technologies of Garden City, marking a significant transition for one of the Treasure Valley’s oldest family-owned businesses. Fisher’s Office Equipment, which traces its roots back nine decades, will continue operating under its current brand and leadership following the purchase by the St. Louis Park company.

A Century-Long Legacy in Ada County

Fisher’s Technologies opened its doors in Downtown Boise on 9th Street in the 1930s, founded by Tom Fisher, who initially sold typewriters to local businesses. The company remained a fixture in the Boise commercial landscape for generations, moving to the Union Block building on Idaho Street during the 1940s before relocating back to 9th Street in 1990 with a larger retail operation.

The milestone year of 1963 proved particularly transformative for the company. That year marked 25 years of operation, and Fisher’s expanded its service offerings by introducing document shredding services—a business line that would grow increasingly important as information security concerns became central to office management across the region.

Ownership Transitions and Regional Expansion

Gary Mahn purchased Fisher’s in 1985 and served as a steward of the business for decades. In 1995, Boise Cascade acquired the company’s office products division, though Fisher’s continued operating as an independent entity. Mahn later sold a controlling stake to three executives—Chris Taylor, Eric Strand, and JT Jones—in 2012. Mahn passed away in 2025.

Under its various ownership structures, Fisher’s expanded significantly across the Mountain West. The company now operates locations throughout Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Utah, and has acquired multiple businesses over the past 15 years, solidifying its position as a regional player in office equipment and document management services.

Continuity Under New Ownership

The acquisition by Loffler Companies represents a continuation rather than a dramatic shift for Fisher’s employees and customers. Ty Grigsby will remain in his leadership role directing day-to-day operations. The Garden City headquarters will maintain its current brand identity, allowing the company to preserve the goodwill and customer relationships built over nearly a century.

James Loffler, whose company was founded in a Minneapolis suburb in 1986, emphasized the relationship between the two firms. “This partnership is especially meaningful because Fisher’s and Loffler have built a trusted friendship over more than 20 years,” Loffler stated, reflecting the long-standing connection that preceded the formal acquisition.

Chris Taylor, one of the three executives who acquired controlling interest in 2012, underscored the importance of finding the right buyer. “After building Fisher’s for decades, it was incredibly important to find a partner who values our people, our customers, and our culture,” Taylor said.

What the Acquisition Means for Ada County

The sale of Fisher’s Technologies illustrates the broader economic landscape facing long-established Ada County businesses. As founders age and ownership structures shift, family-owned companies often face decisions about succession and growth. In this case, the acquisition by Loffler provides capital and resources for continued expansion while preserving the local workforce and brand identity that customers recognize.

For the Boise area, the transaction underscores the region’s role as a hub for office services and business support operations. Document management, equipment provision, and related services remain essential to the region’s diverse economy, supporting everything from small professional firms to larger corporations and government agencies.

The deal also reflects confidence in the long-term viability of office services in an increasingly digital world. While some industries have faced disruption from technological change, businesses like Fisher’s have adapted by diversifying their service offerings—moving beyond equipment sales to encompass document destruction, information security, and other value-added services.

What Comes Next

Fisher’s Technologies will operate as a subsidiary of Loffler Companies while maintaining its existing brand, leadership, and regional presence. Customers across Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Utah should expect continuity in service delivery and pricing. Employees will transition to Loffler’s ownership structure, though management has emphasized that the company culture and people-focused values that define Fisher’s will remain central to operations.

For those seeking more information about how the acquisition may affect existing service agreements or to inquire about Fisher’s services in Ada County and beyond, the company continues to operate from its Garden City location with the same contact information and service capabilities that customers have relied upon for decades.
