St. Luke’s Health System Unveils $200 Million Meridian Medical Center Campus Expansion

St. Luke’s Health System announced plans Thursday for a $200 million expansion of its Meridian Medical Center campus on Eagle Road, the largest single healthcare infrastructure investment in Ada County history. The project will add a new 120-bed patient tower, a significantly expanded emergency department, a dedicated women’s and children’s center, and a state-of-the-art surgical suite designed to accommodate the Treasure Valley’s rapidly growing population for the next two decades.

The expansion responds to patient volume growth that has outpaced the Meridian campus’s capacity for three consecutive years. Since opening in 2006, St. Luke’s Meridian has seen patient visits increase by 35%, driven by the explosive residential growth in Meridian, Eagle, Star, and surrounding Ada County communities that have added tens of thousands of new residents to the hospital’s service area.

What the Meridian Medical Center Expansion Includes

The new patient tower will rise seven stories and add 120 private patient rooms to the campus, bringing the Meridian facility’s total bed count to 352. The tower will include dedicated floors for cardiac care, orthopedic surgery recovery, and medical-surgical patients, with every room designed as a private suite to improve patient outcomes and family comfort.

The expanded emergency department will more than double the current capacity from 30 to 72 treatment bays, addressing chronic overcrowding that has forced ambulance diversions to the Boise campus during peak periods. The new ED will include a dedicated pediatric emergency area, a behavioral health crisis stabilization unit, and a fast-track section for minor injuries and illnesses to reduce wait times for all patients.

“The Treasure Valley is growing faster than almost any community in America, and our healthcare infrastructure must keep pace,” said St. Luke’s CEO Chris Roth in a statement. “This expansion ensures that Ada County families will have access to world-class medical care close to home, without having to travel across town or out of state for advanced treatments.”

Economic Impact on Ada County

The construction phase alone will generate an estimated 1,200 jobs over the three-year building period. Once operational, the expanded campus will add approximately 400 permanent healthcare positions including physicians, nurses, technicians, and support staff. St. Luke’s already employs over 8,000 workers across its Ada County facilities, making it the county’s largest private employer.

The Meridian Chamber of Commerce noted that the expansion will generate significant secondary economic activity, from increased demand for housing and retail services near the campus to expanded opportunities for medical supply companies, pharmaceutical distributors, and healthcare technology firms that support the hospital system.

Community Response and Construction Timeline

Meridian Mayor Robert Simison called the expansion “a vote of confidence in our community’s future” and noted that the city has been working with St. Luke’s on infrastructure improvements around the campus, including road widening and utility upgrades, to support the increased activity the expansion will bring.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 with the patient tower and emergency department. The women’s and children’s center will follow in a second phase beginning in 2028. Full completion of all expansion elements is projected for 2030. During construction, existing hospital operations will continue without interruption, though patients and visitors should expect modified parking and access routes.

What Comes Next

St. Luke’s will host community information sessions about the expansion at the Meridian campus on April 8 and April 22, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.
