Student Union Building to be renamed in Westmark Credit Union sponsorship agreement

Boise State University Student Union Building to Be Renamed in $8.5 Million Westmark Credit Union Sponsorship Agreement

BOISE, Idaho — The Student Union Building at Boise State University will carry a new name under a major sponsorship agreement with an Idaho-based financial institution. The building will be officially renamed the Boise State University Westmark Student Union Building as part of a 10-year partnership with Westmark Credit Union, a deal that will bring more than $8.5 million to the university over the life of the agreement.

Agreement Approved by Idaho State Board of Education

The sponsorship agreement was approved by the Idaho State Board of Education, making Westmark the exclusive official credit union sponsor of Boise State University. As part of the partnership, Westmark will establish a micro-branch inside the Student Union Building, giving students, faculty, staff, and Treasure Valley community members direct access to financial services on campus.

Boise State Interim President Jeremiah Shinn praised the agreement as a natural fit for the university’s mission.

“Westmark Credit Union brings a longstanding commitment to education and community that aligns closely with our mission,” Shinn said. “We’re thankful for this partnership and believe it will create lasting, positive impact for Boise State University students and the communities we serve.”

The funds generated by the agreement are designated to improve the Student Union Building itself and to support high-impact student-serving programs and initiatives across campus.

About Westmark Credit Union’s Idaho Roots

Westmark Credit Union is an Idaho-based, member-owned, full-service financial cooperative with deep roots in the state. Founded in 1954, Westmark has served Idahoans for more than seven decades, growing from a single location in Idaho Falls to a statewide network of 15 branches serving more than 80,000 members. The credit union currently operates five branches in the Treasure Valley, making it a well-established presence in the Boise area.

Westmark President and CEO Mike Schenck said the partnership reflects the credit union’s core mission of improving financial well-being for the communities it serves.

“Westmark is thrilled to partner with Boise State University,” Schenck said. “Together, we have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students and our broader community. This partnership advances our mission to elevate financial well-being by meeting people where they are — providing accessible financial guidance, education, and tools that support real-life decisions. Through our presence in the Westmark Student Union Building, we look forward to serving students, faculty, staff, and the Treasure Valley while supporting Boise State’s commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible education.”

Impact on Boise State Students and the Treasure Valley

For Boise State students, the agreement translates into tangible improvements to one of the most heavily used facilities on campus. The Student Union Building serves as a central hub for student life, housing dining options, meeting spaces, student organizations, and administrative services. Funds directed toward building improvements and student programs stand to benefit thousands of students who pass through the building daily.

The inclusion of a Westmark micro-branch on campus also provides practical financial access for students who may be navigating banking, loans, and financial decisions for the first time. For a university focused on serving working students and first-generation college attendees, on-campus financial services represent a meaningful resource.

Before finalizing the partnership, Boise State hired a consultant to conduct a comprehensive review of campus sponsorship opportunities. That review included benchmarking the university’s assets against peer institutions across the United States, evaluating specific campus locations, and developing strategic recommendations. University officials said Westmark emerged as the right partner based on its alignment with Boise State’s values and long-term objectives.

What Comes Next

With the agreement now approved by the Idaho State Board of Education, Boise State and Westmark are expected to move forward with implementation, including the formal renaming of the Student Union Building and the establishment of the on-site Westmark micro-branch. Students, faculty, and community members interested in Westmark’s services can visit one of the credit union’s five existing Treasure Valley locations or watch for updates from Boise State University regarding the micro-branch opening timeline.
