West Ada approves new Career Technical Education center in Meridian, targeting 2027 opening

West Ada School District Approves $13.8 Million Career Technical Education Center in Meridian, Idaho, Targeting 2027 Opening

The West Ada School District has approved plans for a new Career Technical Education (CTE) center in Meridian, Idaho, converting a vacant warehouse on Locust Grove Road into a modern hands-on training facility. District officials say construction is expected to be completed by August 2027, giving Ada County students expanded access to workforce-ready programs in high-demand trades.

Background: West Ada’s Push to Expand Career Training

West Ada, Idaho’s largest school district, has been working to expand its career technical education offerings to match the Treasure Valley’s rapid growth and its accompanying demand for skilled workers. The district previously purchased a 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Locust Grove Road for $12.8 million, with the intention of repurposing the space into what is expected to become the district’s largest CTE facility once complete.

The push for expanded CTE programming comes as the district prepares to award more than 1,000 CTE diplomas this May — a milestone that underscores growing student interest in career-focused education pathways. West Ada leaders argue that equipping students with trade skills before graduation directly benefits both the students and the broader Treasure Valley economy. Boise State University has also been expanding its footprint in the region, with the State Board of Education recently approving Boise State’s 10-year master plan for long-term institutional growth.

Key Details: Programs, Cost, and Funding

The new CTE center will initially offer programs in residential construction, welding, and powersports — fields with strong local and statewide job demand. Future expansions are already being planned, with the addition of cosmetology and dental assisting programs on the horizon as the facility grows into its full potential.

The total project cost is estimated at $13.8 million, a reduction from an earlier estimate of $16.5 million, achieved through design changes and cost-saving adjustments by district planners. Funding will draw from legislative support — including House Bill 521 — as well as the district’s existing financial reserves. Critically, district officials emphasized that the project will not increase local property taxes, a key consideration for Ada County homeowners already navigating rising costs in the Treasure Valley.

“As Idaho’s largest workforce development organization, West Ada is committed to ensuring every student graduates with a clear pathway to a meaningful career,” said Chief Operations Officer Dr. David Reinhart, according to a district press release.

Once final construction bids are received, the West Ada Board of Trustees will need to give formal final approval before work begins.

Impact on Ada County Residents and Families

For families in Meridian and across Ada County, the new facility represents a significant investment in practical education that leads directly to employment. Programs in construction, welding, and healthcare-adjacent trades like dental assisting fill real workforce gaps in one of Idaho’s fastest-growing counties. Unlike traditional four-year college pathways, CTE programs offer students the ability to enter the workforce quickly, often with certifications and skills that command competitive wages.

The facility’s no-new-taxes funding structure also offers assurance to Ada County taxpayers that district leadership is managing the project with fiscal discipline. The savings generated through design refinements — nearly $2.7 million below the original estimate — reflect responsible stewardship of public resources.

As enrollment pressures continue to strain West Ada, the district is also planning a separate new 750-seat elementary school at the current Lake Hazel Elementary site, estimated to cost $23.2 million, with potential construction beginning this fall and a target opening of August 2027. Growth-related enrollment challenges have become a central issue for Idaho school districts, a topic examined earlier by the Boise School District at a community forum on declining and shifting enrollment trends.

What Comes Next

West Ada’s Board of Trustees will review final construction bids for the Locust Grove Road CTE facility before issuing formal approval to proceed. Residents and parents interested in the project’s progress or available programs can follow updates through the West Ada School District’s official communications channels. The target completion date for both the CTE center and the Lake Hazel replacement school is August 2027, keeping both projects on a parallel timeline as the district works to meet the demands of one of the fastest-growing communities in Idaho.
