West Ada School District is reviewing early data from its Intentional Device Use Framework as leaders assess whether classroom technology targets and expectations are realistic.
The framework was introduced several months before Oct. 22, 2026, but it has not been adopted as official district policy. It addresses the use of school-issued devices during structured classroom time, with the goal of encouraging purposeful technology use and reducing screen time that is not directed by teachers.
West Ada Device Use Data
West Ada collects information through Lightspeed Digital Insights. Aimee Larsen said the system tracks how much time students spend on devices during school, what they do, which applications they use, the time of day, and average daily or weekly screen time.
District officials said preliminary data has been encouraging. Parent survey responses have also been collected, with results expected in early November.
Framework Remains Separate From Cellphone Rules
The classroom framework does not change separate cellphone expectations, including the use of phone vaults in schools. Rhonda McDonough said the issue is not whether students will use devices, but how that use occurs during school.
West Ada plans to continue gathering data and reviewing feedback throughout the school year. District officials will then decide whether the guidance needs adjustments.
