West Ada unveils nearly finished Independence Elementary

The West Ada School District gave future students and their families an early look at Independence Elementary in Star, Idaho, as the newly constructed school nears the end of its build-out. An estimated 500 visitors turned out Thursday for the informal open house, which was organized after the district’s community liaison emailed families to share an invitation to tour the building.

A New School to Ease Overcrowding in Star

Independence Elementary was constructed specifically to relieve pressure on the existing Star Elementary, which had grown severely overcrowded. Some students had been riding buses as long as 45 minutes each way — a burden that drew attention from both school officials and elected leaders in the Star community.

The U-shaped building spans 60,000 square feet and is designed to accommodate up to 700 students. District spokeswoman Michelle Edmonds noted that one of the building’s two wings is shorter and can be extended if enrollment eventually surpasses capacity — a forward-looking design choice given Star’s rapid growth in recent years.

The final construction cost came in at $20 million, which officials described as a typical figure for an elementary school of this size. West Ada tapped funding from House Bill 521, state legislation from which the district received more than $150 million in 2024, to finance the project.

Community Turnout Exceeds Expectations

Principal Jeff Christopherson, who left Hunter Elementary in Meridian to lead the new school, said the turnout on Thursday caught even him off guard.

“This is more than I even expected,” Christopherson said, adding that in hindsight, the response made sense given how Star residents typically rally around local milestones.

Parents who attended echoed that enthusiasm. Elizabeth Jackson, whose son will attend Independence, said the new school would take significant strain off the existing facility. “This is going to relieve a lot of pressure,” she said.

What Comes Next for Independence Elementary

With construction nearly complete, Independence Elementary is on track to open its doors to West Ada students in the coming school year. Families in Star can expect additional communication from the district as enrollment processes and school-year preparations move forward.

For West Ada parents interested in other district opportunities, districts and unions across Idaho have also been updating negotiation agreements to align with new state law — changes that could affect staffing and classroom conditions across the region. And for students curious about hands-on learning opportunities, programs like the Chip Class are building confidence and curiosity in young innovators across the Treasure Valley.

Independence Elementary represents one of several capital investments West Ada has made using the 2024 state school construction funds, as the district works to keep pace with growth across Ada County and its surrounding communities.
