St. Luke’s Health System Expansion Adds 150 Healthcare Jobs to Ada County Economy

St. Luke’s Health System announced Wednesday a $35 million expansion of its Boise campus that will add 150 permanent healthcare positions over the next three years, including physicians, nurses, technicians, and support staff needed to serve Ada County’s growing population. The expansion includes a new 20,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center, an expanded emergency department, and additional specialty clinic space for cardiology, orthopedics, and women’s health services.

The project responds to patient volume growth that has outpaced the hospital’s current capacity. Emergency department visits have increased 18% over the past three years, and wait times for specialty appointments have stretched to 4-6 weeks in some departments — delays that hospital administrators say are unacceptable for a community that deserves timely access to quality healthcare.

What the Hospital Expansion Includes

The outpatient surgery center will feature six operating suites equipped for orthopedic, general surgery, and endoscopic procedures, allowing patients to receive surgical care close to home rather than traveling to larger facilities in Boise or Spokane. The expanded emergency department will add 12 treatment bays to the current configuration, reducing overcrowding and improving response times for critical patients.

The specialty clinic expansion adds 15 new physician offices and examination rooms, enabling the hospital to recruit specialists in high-demand fields. The hospital’s chief medical officer said recruiting has been challenging in a national environment where rural and mid-size hospitals compete with urban medical centers for physician talent.

“Healthcare is a people business, and people follow opportunity,” the CEO said. “By expanding our facilities and capabilities, we create the platform that allows us to recruit the physicians and specialists that Ada County residents need and deserve.”

Economic Impact

The 150 new positions carry average salaries above $65,000, with physician and advanced practice provider positions ranging from $120,000 to $350,000. The hospital’s economic impact study estimates that each healthcare job supports approximately 2 additional jobs in the local economy through indirect spending. The construction phase will generate approximately 200 temporary jobs.

What Comes Next

Construction begins this summer with the outpatient surgery center and is expected to take 18 months. The emergency department expansion follows in a second phase.
